Schunck Glass Palace Rest Centre

Heerlen's iconic glass palace, designed in the 1930s by architect Fritz Peutz, has a turbulent war history. The top floor was, for instance, equipped with anti-aircraft guns and the building was damaged by bombs three times. After the liberation in September 1944, some American generals set up their headquarters there for a brief period and the building served as a 'rest centre' for American and French troops for months.
