The resistance organisation in the Gulpen district suffered a serious setback when on 21 July 1944 the Maastricht Sicherheitspolizei arrested ten employees who had been betrayed by a German infiltrator. Seven of the ten detainees died in a German camp just before liberation.

The Monument to the Fallen is the most important war monument in the municipality of Gulpen-Wittem. The names of nineteen men are engraved on the right-hand side of the pedestal. Most of them were members of the resistance in the Gulpen district and died in 1944. Besides Gulpen, the resistance district included Bocholtz, Simpelveld, Vaals, Wittem, and Wijlre. The names of 22 soldiers from the same district who fell between 1940 and 1947 are inscribed on the left-hand side of the pedestal.
