The memorial commemorates and remembers the soldiers of Company E, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the US 101st Airborne Division. Company E was also known as Easy Company.

The village of Rachamps, located in the municipality of Bastogne, was the final destination where the men of Easy Company stayed after liberating the village on 16 January 1945.

The memorial was installed on 21 September 2002, and a tree was planted by two veterans of Easy Company. The veterans, Bill Guarnerre and Babe Heffron, returned to the village of Rachamps to represent the surviving members of the Company.

The plaque on the memorial reads (in French):

’Tree of Freedom planted on 21 September 2002 by the children of the village and the American veterans of E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne (Band of Brothers) present in Rachamps during the Offensive of 1944 to 1945.’

The memorial and tree are located on the small grassy green in front of the church wall, close to the crossroads at the centre of the village.
