Trasa

Mont-de-Huisnes German war cemetery is located within a 30-metre high mound, one kilometre north of the small commune of Huisnes-sur-Mer in Normandy. This resting place is the only German mausoleum in France, and the tomb is a circular two-storey building with a diameter of about 47 metres.

Inside the complex, an open circular walkway runs along the ground and upper floors. There are 34 crypt rooms on each of the two floors, each containing 180 dead. Each of their names is inscribed on a bronze plaque. A High Cross rises in the middle of the lawn-covered courtyard. In a communal grave between the vestibule and the crypts, 39 dead of the Second World War are buried by name, as well as 58 unknown dead, including 20 children.

There are 11,956 fallen soldiers of the Second World War buried on the site. Most of them were transferred from the French departments of Morbihan, llleet-Vilaine, Mayenne, Sarthe, Loir-et-Cher, Indre-et-Loire, Vienne and Indre, as well as from the Channel Islands of Guernsey, Jersey, Alderney and Sark.

It was in Avranches, less than 20 kilometres from Huisnes-sur-Mer, that the US Army launched Operation Cobra on 25 July 1944. This offensive played a decisive role in breaking through the German defensive front.

The Huisnes-sur-Mer memorial was inaugurated on 14 September 1963.

Accessibility information and renovations:

In spring 2012, a 16-metre-long and 1.5-metre-wide ramp was installed between the entrance and crypt buildings, which is accessible to people with disabilities (PRM). Toilet facilities for persons with disabilities are also accessible from the entrance building.

The facility will be renovated between 2021-2024 due to moisture damage and cracks in the concrete parts. Alongside the renovation work, an exhibition will be set-up in the cemetery entrance-building.
